Strengthening the Climate Adaptation Capacities in Georgia
summary
UNDP, with funds from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), assists the Government of Georgia to develop a well-established system for multi-hazard risk knowledge to ensure effective climate risk management of all hydrometeorological hazards in the country. The nationwide geography of the initiative covers 11 major river basins in Georgia: Alazani, Chorokhi-Ajaristskali, Enguri, Iori, Khrami-Ktsia, Kintrishi, Khobi, Mtkvari (same as Kura), Natanebi, Rioni, Supsa, focusing on the following hazards: floods, landslides, mudflows, avalanches, hailstorms and droughts.
The proposed project is designed to be complementary to the overall initiative funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Government of Georgia, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) aimed to reduce the exposure of Georgia’s communities, livelihoods and infrastructure to climate-induced natural hazards through a well-functioning nation-wide multi-hazard early warning system and risk-informed local action. The initiative will directly benefit 1.7 million people living in the basins of the biggest Georgian rivers.
what we do
In close cooperation with relevant stakeholders, we work to:
- Provide standardized and harmonized national multi-hazard mapping and risk assessment methodology;
- Provide adequate Institutional and legal frameworks for multi-hazard mapping and risk assessment;
- Provide enhanced long-term technical and human capacities of relevant agencies and institutions responsible for multi-hazard mapping and risk assessment;
- Support the improvement of local (municipal) preparedness to multi-hazard risks through enhanced capacities for risk-informed preparedness planning and the existence of the risk-informed preparedness plans.
