Demolition Waste Assessment Outside the Port of Beirut
Demolition Waste Assessment Outside the Port of Beirut
October 27, 2020
Beirut Blast was a real tragedy for the whole country. While humanitarian actors and local NGOs including volunteers continue to address immediate humanitarian needs across affected areas following the Beirut port explosions, the longer-term recovery effort also has to be undertaken backed by proper assessments and planning. In terms of environment, the disaster waste (rubble and other specific waste streams) resulting from the explosion and upcoming demolition and rehabilitation works must be treated in an environmentally-sound manner.
Accordingly, it is imperative to identify the type and amount of waste through a detailed site survey in order to plan and implement an environmentally-sound and efficient waste management system. This report estimates the volume of construction and demolition waste (CDW) including glass waste from the blast as well as the identification of specific disaster waste streams such as hazardous waste, e-waste, and vehicles, which requires specific treatment. The surveying exercise has been led and executed by the Frontline Engineers, a group engineers who volunteered to undertake the technical assessments. They were supported by the UNDP team and EU designed experts as well.
