UNDP Administrator, Achim Steiner, met with H.E. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan

The Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Achim Steiner, met this morning with H.E. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan.
During the meeting, held at the Minister’s Office in Tokyo, Administrator Steiner expressed his deepest condolences for the tragic loss of former Prime Minister Abe and conveyed sincere appreciation for Japan’s unwavering support to UNDP’s development efforts.
He also congratulated Japan’s re-election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (2023-2024) and commended Japan’s timely support to UNDP’s agile response in crisis countries, including in Afghanistan and Ukraine.
Administrator Steiner and Minister Hayashi also exchanged views on the complexity of multiple threats facing humanity now, including climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the war in Ukraine, and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen the Japan-UNDP partnership, based on the principle of human security. They also reaffirmed their commitment to working closely together for the success of upcoming TICAD8 Summit.
Finally, Administrator Steiner expressed his eager anticipation for Japan’s leadership as the country will hold the G7 presidency next year.
