With the continuous urbanization and the ever-increasing use of fast-moving consumer goods, the cities of Nepal have been facing growing issues related to waste management. The current practices of dumping waste have caused environmental pollution, threatening the health, existence and life of all the living species.If this is coupled with unplanned urbanization, the growing cities have to face increasing threats of flooding, waterlogging and water contamination, which is already visible in most of the larger cities.

Recent baseline survey conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics, National Planning Commisson shows that, the annual average total waste collected per urban municipality is amounted to 2231 mt in 2016/17, 2164.4 mt in 2017/18 and 2232.7 mt in 2018/19”. 

As part of UNDP’s effort to the Government of Nepal in managing waste, UNDP has been supporting in the areas of hospital waste management, research and studies and innovation.
