Gender Equality

Overview

Over the past three decades, Georgia has made significant strides toward building a more equal and inclusive society. Yet, entrenched inequalities and persistent stereotypes continue to impede progress.

Setbacks like the repeal of electoral gender quotas in 2024 highlight ongoing challenges. Women’s representation in decision-making remains low, with just 19 percent in parliament and 24 percent in local administrations (2022).

Economic inclusion is similarly limited: nearly 60 percent of women are absent from the formal labour market. Women own only one-third of active enterprises and hold just 16.5 percent of top management positions in private companies (UN Women/ILO, 2023).

The gender pay gap, averaging 20.9 percent, reflects disparities across sectors, from 41.6 percent in crafts and trades to 12.9 percent in sales and services (GEOSTAT, 2023). Alarmingly, gender-based violence remains a pressing issue.

Despite these challenges, public attitudes are shifting. Research reveals growing support for gender equality: three out of four men are comfortable with women managers, and 60 percent of Georgians believe women’s involvement in politics benefits the country (UNDP/UNFPA, 2020).

Our goals

UNDP integrates gender equality principles across all areas of our work, aiming to advance women’s participation in politics, governance, and the economy.

We partner with local and international stakeholders to advocate for women’s rights, challenge discrimination and stereotypes, and combat violence against women and girls.

Our efforts also focus on promoting social inclusion, supporting the care economy, and addressing discrimination against women and vulnerable groups, including LGBTQI+ communities and ethnic and religious minorities.

We champion inclusive economic development that ensures equal benefits for women and men while enhancing skills and knowledge to build resilience to climate change impacts.
