[Closed] Leaving No One Behind in Nepal’s Green, Resilient, and Inclusive COVID-19 Recovery
Summary
UNDP rolled out a socioeconomic recovery initiative after the COVID pandemic in 2020 in partnership with over dozen local governments. By 2022, the initiative was extended to over twenty-nine local governments. UNDP supported livelihood projects have been implemented in fifteen districts and twenty-nine local government. Over 150,000 people, out of which 51% are women, have directly benefited from these projects. These projects have been instrumental in increasing agricultural production by providing farmers with seeds, tools, equipment, technologies, and skills.
Background
As part of a larger COVID response, UNDP continues in strengthening the health system and supporting economic recovery. In line with the principle of ‘leaving no one behind’, activities are focused on socio-economic support to the most vulnerable groups of the population and those most severely impacted by the COVID. These activities are based on UNDP’s global Integrated Response to COVID-19, and the immediate priority areas of the UN Nepal COVID-19 Socio-Economic Recovery Framework, which builds on multiple social and economic impact assessments and consultations with the groups most severely impacted.
Major Achievements
- Supported in 27,599 tons of agricultural production
- About 30,000 seedlings are planted as part of the promotion of green environment in 12 municipalities
- 220 hectare of barren land reclaimed and rehabilitated with multilayer plantation and seasonal vegetable production that benefitted to more than 1,100 households
- 133 sustainable and resilient infrastructure constructed including collection centers, irrigation systems and public parks
- 696 small infrastructures developed for green recovery and livelihood including poultry,pig, cow/buffalo/goat sheds, market centers etc.
- 46 types of 2,603 agriculture tools and equipment handovered as part of agricultural modernization.
- 4,704 returnee migrants’ skills enhanced on enterprise development.
- Enterprise and Business Incubation Center (EBIC) established and provided through a dedicated unit of 5 municipalities (Sainamaina, Tansen, Waling, Putalibajar and Pokhara Metropolitan City) to the aspiring entrepreneurs in the districts and municipal centers.
Gender Equality & Social Inclusion
From the diversity and social inclusion perspective, the project has reached 16% of Dalit community, 32% indigenous nationalities, 34% of youth, 25% returnee migrants, 2.5% single women, 4% Madhesi and 2.4% people with disability (PWDs). In 2022, the project has directly provided the jobs opportunities for over 200 people of which 41% (96) are women.
While going through the women representation from the sectoral engagement, 55% women (11,122 out of 20,214) are in agriculture, 54% (1,788 out of 3,336) are in livestock, 66% (948 out of 1,436) are in entrepreneurship related and 38% (457 out of 1,199) are in other sector.
