Promoting sustainable livestock management and ecosystem conservation in Northern Ukraine

As a result of the full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation as of September 1, according to the Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security, Ukrainian agriculture suffered $4.3 billion in direct and $23.3 billion in consequential losses. $136 million of them is livestock, which ranks second in the Ukrainian agricultural sector. As a result, a number of countries in Africa and Asia, which were the main importers of Ukrainian agricultural products, were threatened with a food crisis. Typical approaches to farming only exacerbate the problem of food security and climate change.

Approximately 3 million hectares of wet peat soils in Northern Ukraine have been drained for agriculture. Due to the deterioration of the useful properties of the soil due to the influence of natural or anthropogenic factors, most of the fertile lands in the landscape of the northern part of Ukraine can no longer be effectively used for growing annual crops.

The transition to ecologically conscious land use requires a complex approach based on paludiculture -  wet agriculture and forestry on peatlands, which contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions due to repeated "wetting".

The aim of "Promoting  sustainable livestock management and ecosystem conservation in Northern Ukraine" project is to create a model of an ecologically conscious food system on 3 million hectares of land in Northern Ukraine, which will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the promotion of soil fertility, and the preservation of species under threat of extinction according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The project provides

  • implementation of comprehensive plans for sustainable land use;
  • land restoration and promotion of ecological production of livestock products and value chains;
  • conservation and restoration of   natural habitats;
  • development of a measurement, verification and reporting system for greenhouse gas  emission estimating in peatlands;
  • coordination, learning, information dissemination, and knowledge management.

The model unites communities, agribusiness, environmental protection institutions and experts in the field of biodiversity, agriculture and livestock. The experience will be shared among all interested stakeholders to create environmentally conscious value chains.

Expected results include

  • improvement of farming methods on 2.98 million hectares of production landscape;
  • involvement of 9,000 direct beneficiaries;
  • improving the state of biodiversity, promoting the conservation of 18 globally significant species;
  • restoration of 36,100 hectares of land (valuable peatlands where the hydrological balance has been restored);
  • conservation of 68,000 hectares of valuable ecosystems;
  • expanding knowledge and understanding of ecologically conscious methods of livestock on wet peat soils;
  • implementation of an innovative sustainable approach to livestock farming on overwettedlands - paludiculture

The project "Promoting  sustainable livestock management and ecosystem conservation in Northern Ukraine" is implemented by the United Nations Development Program in Ukraine (UNDP) with the support of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).
