How to apply

Application considerations

Please note that incomplete applications or applications submitted after the published deadline will not be considered. It is recommended not to wait until the last minute to submit your application.

Firstly and very importantly, read carefully the job vacancy to make sure you meet the minimum requirements to apply for the position(s). Then take some time to reflect on your strengths, your interest, your motivators, your values.

Your online application should tailor the specific position(s) you are applying for. Do not use the same application if you apply for different positions. You should be clear, structure and concise in highlighting the reasons for which you think you are the best candidate. Please be honest in your application. False information may result in disqualification from the recruitment.

In the application you will be asked your contact details. Make sure the email and phone number are up-do-date. You will also be asked if you are currently working for the UN, if you have close relative in the UN system, your language skills, your education. You may also be asked to respond to close/open job-related questions as a pre-screening to verify if you meet the minimum requirements and have the required technical experience.

Even though you apply online through the UNDP recruitment platform, you may want to have a detailed Personal History Form (P11), which is a CV model used in the UN System. This allows you to have all key information at hand in a specifcic document. When filling your P11, keep in mind the following:

  • Make sure you complete it thoroughly (education, languages, experience etc.)
  • For all entries, clearly indicate whether the work was full-time or part-time by using percentage estimates. i.e. full-time is 100%, whereas part-time is typically around 50%.
  • For consultancies, please indicate a lump sum annual amount or the daily rate.
  • For non-UN positions, please enter the annual income.
  • For UN positions, please indicate type of contract and salary level, i.e. P1, P2, etc.
  • Clearly specify unpaid volunteer positions and internships as such.
  • Kindly avoid overlapping employment periods unless followed by explanatory text.
  • It is important to include a detailed description of the main responsibilities and tasks you carried out during each period of employment.

You can complement your application form with a cover letter. Such a letter offers you the opportunity to explain what has motivated you to apply for the specific position (or positions). It is also an opportunity for you to highlight what you think are your most relevant qualifications for the particular position(s) you are interested in.

Please note that you are expected to write a separate and relevant cover letter for each position for which you are applying.

For your cover letter(s), please use the language indicated beside the respective vacancy notice, which is the language of the duty station and in which a high level of competency is required. Make sure you check your spelling.

After you submit the documents you will receive an automatic email confirming receipt of your application.

You are evaluated on the basis of the content of your application and if you meet the requirement your profile will be shared with the hiring manager. Due to the high number of applications, we are only able to contact candidates who make it through initial screening.
