The UNDP's main goal in Guyana is to promote human development and reduce inequalities, aligning with the new government’s commitment to improving the lives of all citizens. This goal is being pursued through a series of strategic actions aimed at addressing issues like extreme poverty, creating opportunities for disadvantaged communities, bridging the gap between the coastland and hinterland, enhancing citizen security and social cohesion, and improving access to quality primary healthcare. Additionally, there is a focus on sustainable development, including the use of renewable energy in rural areas, and strengthening local democracy.
In the new country programme, UNDP will support many of these initiatives, primarily in the areas of poverty, governance, and the environment. Building on successful past efforts, the programme will adapt to changing national needs, with new priorities like citizen security and the management of extractive industries. A key focus of the programme will be capacity-building, working closely with key ministries, local authorities, and civil society to ensure the effective implementation of these initiatives.
