The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Foundation for Climate Protection and Carbon Offset KliK wish to cooperate in their climate protection efforts under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signed in November 2022, establishes a basis to obtain ITMOs (Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes) from UNDP’s GHG mitigation programmes developed in several partner countries.

UNDP’s Carbon Payment for Development is a flagship example of UNDP’s ‘future-smart’ approach to development – harnessing innovative financial mechanisms, partnerships with governments and the private sector, as well knowledge and capacity building to advance integrated development outcomes that support progress on multiple SDGs. UNDP is engaging with the Swiss Federal Office of the Environment to facilitate the transfer of International Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) from host countries to Switzerland. The KliK Foundation is mandated under the CO₂ Act of the Swiss Confederation to offset parts of the carbon emissions generated by the transport sector in Switzerland, following the rules of the Paris Agreement. To this end, the KliK Foundation supports climate protection programmes in countries that have a bilateral cooperation agreement with Switzerland under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, with the aim to purchase the resulting International Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs).  

Under the MOU, UNDP and the KliK Foundation are following the guidelines of Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement to ensure the ITMO programmes are additional to the NDCs of the host countries and support their sustainable development.
