Adapting Uzbekistan’s agriculture to climate change

UNDP and Uzhydromet with the financial support from the Government of Japan, and with the assistance of the SATREPS project on climate change in Uzbekistan held a scientific and practical conference on agricultural adaptation to climate change, challenges and effective solutions for Uzbekistan.

Climate change has a significant impact on agriculture, making adaptation issues a top priority for researchers and practitioners. In this regard, the conference aimed to bring together researchers and practitioners in the field of improving forecasting and data analysis systems to discuss issues related to climate resilience of horticultural producers and, more broadly, agriculture.

During the conference, Kyoto University researchers and professors presented Japanese expertise in land surface processes modeling using the SiBUC model. They also considered the issues of water circulation in the Aral Sea basin and the potential impacts of climate change on water resources, and presented an overview of the climate challenges the region is facing and their impact on agrobiodiversity.

Other sessions focused on international experience in providing agrometeorological monitoring and the technical capabilities of agrometeorological stations installed in the Fergana Valley.

The conference served as a platform for discussing current agricultural challenges in Uzbekistan, as well as the potential for leveraging scientific achievements in the country.

The “Climate resilient livelihoods of horticultural producers in Fergana valley in Uzbekistan” project is a joint initiative of UNDP and Uzhydromet funded by the Government of Japan. The project aims to meet the needs of agricultural communities in the Fergana Valley by modernizing of agrometeorological observation networks and early warnings system, shaping agrometeorological services for horticultural producers and implementing climate-informed planning.
