UNDP supports the establishment of a coordination mechanism for intersectoral adaptation planning in Turkmenistan

Ashgabat, 14 April 2023: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Turkmenistan jointly with the United State Agency for International Development (USAID) organized a roundtable to discuss the establishment of a coordination mechanism for intersectoral adaptation planning in Turkmenistan.
The roundtable was devoted to the revision and validation of the Regulation of the Working Group on Climate Change of the Intersectoral Commission on Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan. The reason for the revision of the document was defined by the decision to appoint a Working Group as the coordination mechanism to implement the adaptation component of the Paris Agreement.
The roundtable was attended by specialists of the Mejlis, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Adalat of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Defense of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan, the State Committee of Water Management of Turkmenistan, the State Statistics Committee of Turkmenistan, the Caspian See Institute of Turkmenistan, and the Turkmen Agricultural University named after S.A. Niyazov.
After joint discussions, the participants agreed to expand the scope of functions of the Working Group to ensure that from now on it will begin to coordinate activities of stakeholders involved in the preparation of the national adaptation plan. The Working Group will support the development of adaptation strategies, the establishment of a financial mechanism for the NAP process, the development of a road map, as well as provide monitoring and evaluation of the NAP implementation. The composition of the Working Group was also expanded to ensure proper participation and involvement of representatives of various sectors of the economy of Turkmenistan.
The roundtable is a joint event organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, the UNDP/ GCF project “Developing a National Adaptation Planning Process in Turkmenistan” and USAID “Governance Support Programme in Turkmenistan”.
