Unveiling of EU-Funded Project for Responsive and Accountable Democratic Transition (EU-UNDP GREAT Initiative)

The Gambia's Responsive and Accountable Democratic Transition (EU-UNDP GREAT Initiative), was unveiled by H.E. Adama Barrow, President of The Republic of The Gambia today during the Stakeholder Conference and Donor Roundtable on the Implementation of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) Recommendations. The EU-UNDP GREAT Initiative is a 9 million Euro initiative funded by the European Union and will be implemented by UNDP in partnership with the Ministry of Justice from this year until 2027. It aims to support The Gambia's democratic transition through three key objectives:
- to promote consensus on constitutional and legislative reforms,
- to enhance transitional justice and human rights process, rule of law and human rights, and
- to strengthen local governance structures.
This EU-funded initiative underscores the commitment to fostering a responsive and accountable democratic system in The Gambia. By promoting consensus on constitutional and legislative reforms, the intiiative aims to suppport the enhancement of the governance model for the country to ensure it operates more efficiently with improved checks and balances. It seeks to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the rights of minorities and the most vulnerable. Furthermore, the project will contribute to the ongoing transitional justice process, promoting the rule of law, and safeguarding human rights. Additionally, it will focus on strengthening the strategic, technical and infrastructural capacities of legal, justice and rule of law instituions as well as local governance structures to enhance their effectiveness.
The launch of the project marks a significant milestone in The Gambia's democratic transition journey, signaling the collective effort of the European Union, UNDP, and the Government of The Gambia in promoting good governance and human rights. The project's objectives align with the nation's aspirations for a more transparent, accountable, and responsive democratic system and is aligned with the National Development Plan (NDP) 2023-2027 Pillar II on Governance Reforms.
The UNDP in The Gambia, in partnership with the European Union and in close collaboration with The Government of The Gambia, remains committed to supporting The Gambia's democratic transition process, ensuring citizen engagement, and fostering inclusive and sustainable development.
