Human Rights Defenders Training in Fuvahmulah and Addu Concludes

A three-day Human Rights Defenders Programme, held in Fuvahmulah and Addu cities, concluded with the successful participation of 21 participants. The programme was led by the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives, with support from the Government of Australia.
The programme kicked off with the launch of the Human Rights Defenders Manual by HRCM, which was supported by UNDP Maldives and the Australian Government. The manual offers guidance and knowledge to human rights defenders of various roles, serving as a vital resource for training future generations of defenders.
Speaking at the event, Catherine Haswell, the United Nations Resident Coordinator to the Maldives, stressed the importance of creating a safe environment for rights defenders to ensure their ability to operate safely, emphasizing howprotecting their freedoms of expression, association, and assembly is essential to achieving Agenda 2030 and leaving no one behind.
"This year, we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These rights, vital for justice and fairness, are enshrined in our Constitution, covering life, liberty, security, freedom, and a fair trial," the Resident Coordinator said.
The launch event was also attended by Andrew Hodges, Australian Deputy High Commissioner to the Maldives. "Australia recognizes that human rights defenders play an important role in advocating for communities that may be particularly vulnerable to abuses and addressing any human rights violations." the Deputy High Commissioner said.
Human Rights Defenders play a vital role in promoting and safeguarding individual rights, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of justice and equality.
