With a growing population and a large share of young people, the youth of Tanzania hold the key to the country's future. As the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) strives to foster sustainable development and peace, its initiatives targeting the youth population are gaining increased importance. Tanzania, a nation with over 50% of its population under the age of 18 and 77% below 30, faces the critical task of harnessing the potential of its young population to drive inclusive growth and build a prosperous society. Tanzania boasts a youthful population, with over 20 million young people between the ages of 15 and 24. This vibrant demographic represents a tremendous opportunity for the country's development. However, harnessing this potential comes with its own set of challenges. High unemployment rates among youth pose a significant obstacle, with an estimated 11% of young Tanzanians currently unemployed. Additionally, limited access to quality education, vocational training, and information on available opportunities further exacerbate the difficulties faced by the youth in pursuing sustainable livelihoods.

Recognizing the critical role of youth in Tanzania's development, UNDP has taken proactive steps to empower young people and promote peace. Through partnerships with the Tanzanian government, civil society organizations, and Development Partners, UNDP focuses on providing youth with the necessary tools, resources, and opportunities to succeed.

One of the flagship initiatives driving UNDP's work on youth and peace in Tanzania is the Dumisha Amani project implemented in partnership with the Global Peace Foundation and the Center for Youth Dialogue. This comprehensive endeavor aims to sustain peace by addressing the root causes of conflict, with a particular focus on youth empowerment. Through impactful needs assessment exercises conducted across six districts in Lindi, Ruvuma, and Mtwara regions, UNDP is on the ground engaging directly with the youth and local government, listening to their voices and identifying the most pressing challenges they face.

UNDP's approach to empowering youth in Tanzania through the Dumisha Amani project encompasses various dimensions, impacting over 5,000 young people in Mainland and Zanzibar. Education plays a pivotal role, with initiatives focused on improving access to quality education and enhancing vocational training opportunities. By equipping youth with the necessary skills and knowledge, UNDP aims to enhance their employability and foster entrepreneurship.
