Raa Meedhoo's 'Blue Water' Project: A Sustainable Solution to Beat Plastic Pollution
August 7, 2023
Raa Atoll Meedhoo is taking a significant step to combat plastic pollution with the launch of their 'Blue Water' project, which introduces glass water bottles to address single-use plastic waste on the island and ensure a cleaner environment. This initiative is led by a local NGO, Meedhoo Jamiyyathul Salaah (MJS), and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme.
By providing clean drinking water through Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology supplied in reusable glass bottles, the project guarantees access to clean drinking water while also ensuring this process is environmentally sustainable, enhancing water security, and preserving the island’s ecosystem.
The 'Blue Water' project sets a great example for other communities dealing with plastic waste. It shows how local efforts can make a difference in the global fight against pollution and encourages a shift towards more mindful consumption and taking care of the environment.
