Workshop on Disability Inclusion: Sensitization and Strategy Development for Maldives Judiciary
September 21, 2023
The Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives, conducted a workshop on 'Disability Inclusion: Sensitization and Strategy Development' for the staff of DJA and the Family Court of Maldives.
The session, under joint efforts between UNDP in the Maldives and DJA, was facilitated by UNDP Maldives, to make the justice system more accessible for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The session aimed at understanding the existing barriers and challenges for PWDs within the justice system and increasing awareness among judicial staff on accessibility, with the objective to develop internal guidelines and a strategy for disability inclusion.
Participants from the Maldives Association of Persons with Disabilities (MAPD), Bind and Visually Impaired Society of the Maldives (BVISM), and the Maldives Deaf Association presented issues faced by PWDs concerning services offered by the courts and suggested measures to address the issues.
A total of 66 individuals participated in the session. Further sessions have been planned for court staff under the disability inclusion programme.
