Beach Profile Study in Maaneyre, Fuvahmulah City

In a collaborative effort to safeguard the natural beauty of Fuvahmulah City, a crucial step has been taken through the "Land Degradation Prevention Through Coral Gardening Project." Recently, a comprehensive Beach Profile study was conducted in the Maaneyre area, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing conservation initiatives.
The collaborative project, made possible with support from the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives is being executed in partnership with the Fuvahmulah City Council by Fuvahmulah Surfing Association.
The Maaneyre area, a gem in Fuvahmulah City, has been closely examined through the Beach Profile study. The findings indicate minimal debris accumulation and highlight the presence of juvenile fish, emphasizing the area's ecological significance. Moreover, the beach has been actively used for recreational activities such as swimming and snorkeling, underlining its importance to the local community.
Recognizing the need for proactive conservation, the project aims to breathe new life into Maaneyre through coral gardening, physical prep work for which has now begun. By cultivating coral reefs, the initiative not only seeks to revive marine ecosystems but also addresses the challenge of coastal erosion, ensuring the long-term resilience of this coastal area.
The choice of coral gardening as a conservation method is deliberate, as it aligns with broader climate action goals and contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Coral reefs play a vital role in carbon sequestration and provide habitat for marine life, making their restoration a crucial aspect of environmental sustainability.
By involving the local community, including the Fuvahmulah City Council, the project not only addresses environmental challenges but also fosters a sense of shared responsibility and stewardship for Fuvahmulah's natural resources.
