October 28, 2023
UNDP Accelerator Labs in the Maldives concluded a workshop on 'Community Participation for Climate Action' in Fuvahmulah City, in collaboration with the Fuvahmulah City Council.
Discussions during the workshop focused on the triple planetary crisis and methods for utilizing collective intelligence from the community to confront these challenges. Participants also delved deeper into participatory mapping within the island, engaging in live mapping sessions to identify and map natural resources and hazards.
"In a bushfire, we may see challenges from a distance, but understanding the impact requires community insight. What we are doing here is creating a space for that knowledge to emerge, capturing ideas, realities, and crafting solutions from collective community wisdom," said Enrico Gaveglia, UNDP Resident Representative in the Maldives, who joined the participants and highlighted the importance of community insights.
The workshop concluded with a session by Urbanco on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to equip interested participants with essential skills. This aimed to empower them to effectively utilize crowd-mapped GIS data, enabling their active involvement in advancing climate action initiatives.
