Climate Box: Thinking Out-of-the-Box for Climate Education
May 3, 2024
May 2, 2024 Green University launched a national workshop for teachers under the projects "Climate Education to Promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Climate Action" and "Eco-Schools Uzbekistan". The event, organized by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Ministry of preschool and school education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Zamin Foundation and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uzbekistan, is dedicated to training teachers on the use of the updated "Climate Box" Educational Kit in the educational process. The aim is to improve the professional competences of school teachers, methodologists, and out-of-school education teachers by providing them with the latest scientific information on climate change, supplementing their teaching methods with new interactive methodologies and tools to make schoolchildren's learning fun and interesting, using games, quizzes and experiments, and solving creative problems.
Successfully addressing climate change requires a deep understanding of its roots. Despite extensive research in academia, the information is often too complex for a wide audience, including educators, who play a key role in creating environmental awareness and responsibility among the younger generation.
Recognizing the importance of climate change, the United Nations Development Programme developed the Climate Box Educational Kit in 2014. It suggests new ways of teaching about climate change in school, providing opportunities for young people to think about the problem, find possible solutions and take specific actions to protect the planet and manage the impact of climate change. Follow the link https://climate-box.com/ to learn more about using Climate Box and to access learning materials in 13 languages and an interactive space for teachers and school education experts.
It is expected that the Climate Box will be integrated into school programs in Uzbekistan and used in extracurricular and independent lessons with school students. The materials are adapted for different age groups and cover both theoretical knowledge and practical aspects. They include recommendations for experimentation and the design and implementation of climate projects aimed at applying what has been learned to real-life applications.
