The UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan, Katarzyna Wawiernia, and the Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, Maulen Ashimbayev, held a bilateral meeting today to review the partnership’s achievements and discuss strategic plans for the upcoming year and beyond.
During the meeting, the Speaker highly evaluated UNDP's efforts to accelerate SDG integration in Kazakhstan, stating,
“At the UN Summit, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stressed that the implementation of the SDGs is a national priority for Kazakhstan. In this regard, targeted actions are being taken to achieve the desired results in this direction. Members of Parliament are also involved in this work. Last year, on behalf of the President, a Parliamentary Commission was established to monitor the implementation of national goals and objectives in the field of sustainable development.”
Thus, the meeting highlighted the successful completion of the first year of a vital partnership component, the Parliamentary Commission on monitoring the implementation of national goals and objectives for sustainable development. The Parliamentary Commission, supported by UNDP, has addressed crucial Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) topics, including air pollution, water management, clean energy, health, education, and ESG issues.

“This mechanism allows for continuous contributions to achieving specific SDGs through a multi-layered approach, including expert discussions, high-level hearings, and comprehensive oversight.”
The Parliamentary Commission was supported by the UNDP Regional SDG Platform for Central Asia initiative, funded by the European Union. The Platform aims to strengthen the SDG architecture in Kazakhstan by fostering regional integration, promoting knowledge-sharing, reinforcing institutions, and addressing financial barriers to sustainable development.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of consistency in SDG implementation and monitoring, with the Parliament’s multi-year terms providing a stable framework for ongoing progress.
UNDP expressed its readiness to support Kazakhstan’s upcoming third Voluntary National Review (VNR) in 2025. At the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York, it will share the country’s experiences and progress on the 2030 Agenda.
Looking ahead, UNDP proposed several initiatives to strengthen the partnership further, focusing on SDG integration, gender equality agenda, and regional development.
