Nairobi, Kenya – June 6, 2024 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kenya, in collaboration with Nairobi City County, proudly announces the deployment of its first subnational Digital Readiness Assessment. This pioneering initiative marks a significant milestone in Nairobi's journey towards becoming a smart and digital hub.

Nairobi envisions a future where digital empowerment drives innovation, enhances public services, and promotes inclusive growth. The Digital Readiness Assessment will guide this transformative journey by providing a comprehensive analysis of the city's digital capabilities and identifying key areas for strategic investment and improvement.

H.E. Johnson Sakaja, Governor of Nairobi City County, remarked, "Our vision is to transform Nairobi into a digital powerhouse that champions innovation and inclusive growth. Through strategic investments and partnerships, we are dedicated to creating a city where every resident can thrive in a connected, resilient, and smart urban environment with UNDP's support. We appreciate the immense opportunity and productive elasticity that digital transformation presents for employment creation and service delivery in our city, nationally and globally."

By leveraging state-of-the-art technologies and fostering strong collaborations with stakeholders, Nairobi City County is committed to creating a smart, resilient, and connected urban environment. This initiative will ensure that every resident benefits from digital infrastructure and service advancements, positioning Nairobi as a model city for digital transformation and sustainable development.

Mr. Anthony Ngororano, UNDP Kenya's Resident Representative, stated, "This Digital Readiness Assessment is a groundbreaking step towards realizing Nairobi's vision of a future smart city. By understanding the current digital landscape and identifying opportunities for growth, we can strategically invest in technologies that will drive innovation and improve public services for all residents."

The assessment highlights several key components necessary for Nairobi's digital transformation, including strategic investments in technology to enhance connectivity, data management, and service delivery. It emphasizes building strong collaborations with private sector players, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and international bodies to foster innovation and drive sustainable growth. Furthermore, it focuses on enhancing public services by utilizing digital tools to improve efficiency, accessibility, and transparency, ensuring that all residents have equitable access to essential resources. Promoting inclusive growth by implementing programmes that bridge the digital divide, providing digital literacy training, and ensuring marginalized communities benefit from digital advancements are also a priority.

Kefa Omanga, Director of Partnerships at the Office of the Governor, Nairobi County, remarked, "Inclusive digital transformation connects people, businesses, and governments, serving as a powerful catalyst to accelerate the achievement of sustainable development goals. With valuable support from the UNDP, we are committed to not leaving anyone behind."

UNDP Kenya and Nairobi City County invite all stakeholders to engage with this initiative and contribute to Nairobi's digital transformation. Together, we can build a future where digital empowerment drives sustainable development and enhances the quality of life for all Nairobians.
