Rennell, Solomon Islands: The West Rennell Community, in collaboration with the UN Development Programme (UNDP), has launched a groundbreaking ‘Community-Led Guidelines for Engagement in Extractive Activities’ in Solomon Islands.
This document marks a significant step towards sustainable and equitable management of communal land in both Solomon Islands, and the Pacific region.
Developed under a Peacebuilding Fund project, the guidelines embody the aspirations of the Rennell and Bellona community for responsible extractive practices. The project itself focuses on empowering young people and women to participate in conflict resolution and land management decisions in Rennell and Bellona. This collaborative effort aims to address land conflicts and challenges related to extractive activities.

The drafting process involved dialogue between the community of Rennell and Bellona, government, and extractive industries. These guidelines are the first community-led initiative of their kind in the region, promoting inclusive decision-making in the extractive sector.
"These guidelines reflect our voices and ensure our rights are respected," says Rebecca Sina Tango from the Council of Women in Rennell. The guidelines address the environmental and social concerns associated with extractive industries in Rennell and Bellona, promoting responsible practices and respect for traditional governance.
"The Rennell and Bellona community sets a model for others," says Nanise Saune-Qaloewai, UNDP Programme Manager. These guidelines can foster dialogue and cooperation between communities, governments, and industries across the Pacific and beyond.
Dr. Francesca Marzatico, who co-drafted the guidelines, highlights their revolutionary aspects, particularly including women and youth in decision-making. This, she says, is a bold step towards sustainable development and community empowerment in Rennell and Bellona.
