EU4UASchools: Build Back Better

ECHO4SCHOOLS-UA: Repair/Retrofitting of schools in war-affected regions

Summary:

In November 2022, the UNDP in Ukraine, with financial support from the European Union, launched a project entitled “EU4UASchools: Build Back Better” to carry out the repair, retrofitting and re-equipping of schools in 11 oblasts of Ukraine: Zhytomyr, Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Rivne, Odesa, Zakarpattia, Khmelnytskyi (re-equipment & renovation), and Cherkasy, Lviv, Kirovograd, and Poltava (re-equipment only). 

Goal: 

To support national and local governments in reducing social and economic losses and to accelerate the recovery process through repairing educational facilities.

Expected results:

Result 1: 66 schools in the war-affected areas have been repaired and/or retrofitted through light and medium repairs, and 112 schools have been furnished (provided with desks, chairs, bookcases, blackboards).

Result 2: More than 27,757 students and teachers from the targeted areas have been able to return to in-person classes in their newly upgraded schools, which offer a safer learning environment.

Result 3: All the reconstruction work is being conducted according to the Build Back Better principle to reduce risks from the present hazards and to upgrade the capabilities of the existing buildings and infrastructure to meet the current requirements of the learning process.
