A four-day Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training programme, organized by the Eliminating POPs through the Safe Management of Chemicals Project, recently concluded with significant success. The newly trained participants are prepared to play fundamental roles in ensuring adherence to HAZWOPER guidelines and procedures. This initiative, supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives, aims to strengthen stakeholder capacity in following HAZWOPER standards.

Participants from diverse stakeholder institutions completed the comprehensive programme, which covered essential aspects of the HAZWOPER Standard as detailed in OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910.120, equipping attendees with crucial skills and knowledge necessary for effective hazardous waste management and emergency response protocols.

The project’s commitment to enhancing environmental safety and sustainability through rigorous training initiatives is underscored by this effort. This collaborative endeavour not only empowers local stakeholders but also contributes to broader environmental stewardship goals. The newly trained participants are now prepared to play fundamental roles in ensuring adherence to HAZWOPER standards, thereby safeguarding communities and ecosystems from the potential hazards associated with hazardous waste operations and emergencies.
