In early June, the House of Expertise for Bees held its opening ceremony in Kikla. This event marked a significant milestone in empowering local beekeepers and bringing hope to the community.

In the aftermath of 2011, Kikla, like many other municipalities experienced intense conflict. The destruction and displacement caused a profound impact on the lives of the people living there, which once hosted around 20,000 residents. Even though a peace deal has been signed, 90% of Kikla's residents have not returned due to lack of economic opportunities and damaged infrastructure to sustain their lives (UNDP, 2022).

With the Taazur Project, UNDP’s Local Peacebuilding and Resilience Programme aims to encourage a return of life and enhance livelihood opportunities for vulnerable groups through support to local organizations.

Local CSOs, such as Wafa and Amal Org, play a crucial role in uplifting livelihoods by connecting with communities and accessing vulnerable groups in Kikla.

Abdelaziz Omar, Activity Manager from Wafa and Amal Org, detailed how "The opening of the House of Expertise for Bees is a monumental step forward for Kikla. Beekeeping not only revives a traditional practice but also provides a sustainable source of income. Through this initiative, and others, we aim to restore economic stability, and foster resilience among the residents”.

With funding from the European Union, UNDP engaged with Moomken organization as implementing partner to support Wafa and Amal Org, who hosted the opening ceremony of The House of Expertise for Bees this month.

The expansion of beekeeping not only generates employment opportunities, but also develops value chains. Increased production and sales of honey, beeswax, and other products also establishes sustainable livelihoods and leads to higher incomes for beekeepers.

By leveraging Kikla's strengths in beekeeping and addressing industry challenges, Kikla now stands to boast a sustainable beekeeping sector that supports the community, enhances local biodiversity, and drives economic growth.
