Bishkek, 29 July 2024 - On 22-23 July, the United Nations Development Programme in the Kyrgyz Republic (UNDP) and the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), jointly with the Secretariat of the Security Council of the Kyrgyz Republic, held a national workshop on sharing best practices in small arms and light weapons (SALW) control.

The workshop participants included representatives from government agencies, civil society, the expert community, and international experts involved in arms control issues. During the seminar, participants studied comparative experiences in the establishment and functioning of model national coordination bodies around the world, including in the Balkan countries, as well as the development of National Action Plans (NAPs) on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW).

Marat Imankulov, Secretary of the Security Council of the Kyrgyz Republic, noted that the workshop aimed to address problems and risks related to small arms and light weapons control. He emphasized that the participants are tasked with developing a draft National Action Plan within a short time frame, which will include advanced and effective arms control mechanisms. This plan is intended to increase the security of citizens and society, as well as strengthen national and regional security. Imankulov expressed confidence that, with the help of international partners, the participants will successfully accomplish this task.

Monica Rijal, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, emphasized that the workshop is an important milestone in cooperation to strengthen control and management of SALW in Kyrgyzstan. “Control of SALW is vital to ensure the safety of citizens, prevent violence and promote sustainable development,” she said.

The workshop marked the beginning of the practical preparation of a National Action Plan on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) in Kyrgyzstan, incorporating international standards and best practices. Under the overall coordination of the Secretariat of the Security Council of the Kyrgyz Republic, members of the interagency working group will hold working meetings to develop the action plan on SALW.

UNDP Supports Strengthening Capacity in Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons in the Kyrgyz Republic withing the new SALIENT project, "Strengthening Control Over Small Arms and Light Weapons in the Kyrgyz Republic."   The project, adhering to the principle of inclusivity, aims at broad involvement of all segments of society, including women and community leaders, in decision-making processes, considering their significant role in reducing the scale of armed violence.
