Ending violence – empowering change

Gender equality in the Republic of Serbia is constitutionally guaranteed and pursued through various legislative measures and strategies. Domestic violence, primarily affecting women and girls, is a criminal offense, and discrimination based on gender is prohibited. Investing in gender equality is more than a legal obligation: it is a strategic societal decision with far-reaching benefits for the wellbeing and prosperity of society.

Despite legislative efforts, structural inequalities persist in Serbia, particularly regarding gender segregation in education and the labor market. Women also face disparities in income and are disproportionately affected by poverty and unpaid domestic work. Women are the majority of victims of domestic violence, including those killed in this context.

Project Goal

To contribute to creating a society where gender-based discrimination and violence are unacceptable, women’s rights are protected, and both women and men equally participate and contribute to all aspects of life.

Project Focus

  • Changing gender-based attitudes, roles, and responsibilities in private life.

  • Strengthening institutional responses to gender-based and domestic violence.

  • Economic empowerment of women and support for career advancement.

  • Enhancing protection of gender equality and women’s rights.

The project is implemented jointly by the Government of the Republic of Serbia and four UN agencies, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF and UN Women, with the support of the Government of Sweden.

The project is implemented from January 2024 to December 2026.
