United Nations Development Programme and Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Promote Democracy and Development in West And Central Africa

Edo State, Nigeria, 13th June 2024—In a move to advance sustainable peace, democratic governance, and leadership development in West and Central Africa, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) have today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The signing ceremony took place on the margins of the 2024 Democracy Dialogue in the presence of eminent leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders who had gathered to discuss the critical role of education and leadership in Africa's development.
The MoU aims to enhance development activities focusing on preventive diplomacy for sustainable peace, promoting knowledge generation and utilization, and enhancing leadership capabilities in the region.

The MoU is designed to promote sustainable peace by combating hate speech and misinformation, generating and utilizing knowledge for conflict prevention, and ensuring peaceful elections and transitions in politically unstable countries. The partnership will foster sustainable development and good governance in West and Central Africa.

This partnership aims to cultivate a new generation of leaders through inter-generational dialogue, coaching, and mentorship programs focused on ethical leadership, innovation, and inclusivity. Expected outcomes include enhanced diplomatic collaboration, reduced spread of misinformation, smoother electoral processes, and the emergence of leaders capable of addressing contemporary challenges with innovative solutions.

Following the signing of the MoU, both UNDP and GJF will commence collaborative efforts to implement the agreed outcomes as outlined above.
