September 25, 2024

Bishkek, 25 September 2024 – The Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), held a two-day national workshop on the revision of the country’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). The workshop, which took place on 24-25 September, marked the official launch of efforts to align Kyrgyzstan’s biodiversity conservation strategies with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Key government representatives, experts, and stakeholders convened to discuss and shape Kyrgyzstan’s strategic approach to halting and reversing biodiversity loss. This event was a significant milestone in the country’s commitment to achieving the global targets set by the GBF, which outlines four long-term goals to be achieved by 2050, with 23 specific targets to be reached by 2030. This framework envisions a future where humanity lives in harmony with nature by 2050, with immediate actions required to meet these targets over the next few years.

The workshop also marked the official kick-off of the NBSAP revision process in Kyrgyzstan, supported by UNDP. The revised plan will align with the GBF objectives and lay a solid foundation for future biodiversity conservation efforts in the country.

In his remarks, Mirslav Amankulov, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic, emphasized the importance of a unified national approach: “The Government of the Kyrgyz Republic will make every effort to ensure that this process is as inclusive as possible and based on the active participation of all stakeholders.”

We work to restore biodiversity, create jobs, build community resilience, and drive sustainable development in the country..”

UNDP Global Support Team representative Christina Supples also praised Kyrgyzstan’s proactive approach, stating: “With COP 16 just a month away, countries around the world like Kyrgyzstan are working hard to align their national biodiversity targets with the Global Biodiversity Frameworks and update their National biodiversity strategies and action plans..”

The workshop provided a comprehensive platform for addressing Kyrgyzstan’s biodiversity challenges. Participants reviewed the current state of biodiversity and explored future prospects within the context of global biodiversity goals. Through collaborative sessions, they identified key challenges, set specific targets, and defined indicators to measure progress. They also reviewed national strategic documents and outlined a roadmap for the revised NBSAP, ensuring it effectively addresses both local needs and global commitments.

By fostering collaboration across government, civil society, the private sector, youth, academia, and other stakeholders, the event ensured the inclusion of diverse perspectives crucial for shaping Kyrgyzstan’s biodiversity efforts.

UNDP Kyrgyzstan remains committed to supporting the government in its efforts to conserve biodiversity, contributing to both national development priorities and global environmental goals.
