On September 27, the global community comes together to celebrate World Tourism Day, an initiative that underscores the social, cultural, political, and economic significance of tourism. This year's theme, "Tourism and Peace," emphasizes tourism’s vital role to foster understanding and cooperation among nations. As António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, states, “By valuing and preserving cultural and natural heritage, tourism can help reduce tensions and nurture peaceful coexistence.”

Since its inception in 1980, World Tourism Day has highlighted tourism’s contributions not only to local economies but also to global peace and intercultural dialogue. In Kyrgyzstan, a country with extraordinary natural beauty and cultural richness, the tourism sector offers unique opportunities for economic development and social empowerment, especially for women.

Tourism’s Economic Impact in Kyrgyzstan

Tourism plays a pivotal role in Kyrgyzstan’s economic growth, generating income, creating jobs, and supporting the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). According to the latest data, the gross value added in the tourism sector of the country amounted to 15.8 billion KGS in 2023, increasing to 17.4 billion KGS in the first half of 2024. This indicates significant growth and development in the tourism industry, positively impacting the economy as a whole. The total gross value added, 12,067.6 million soms is attributed to services in the field of recreation and leisure. In the first half of 2024, this figure rose to 15,107.7 million soms, highlighting the growing interest of both local and foreign tourists in recreation and entertainment in our country. The share of tourism activity in the gross domestic product (GDP) also shows positive dynamics, rising from 2.5% in 2023 to 2.7% in the first half of 2024. This underscores the importance of the tourism sector for sustainable economic growth and the creation of new jobs.

Through its “Aid for trade” project, the UNDP has made significant contributions to the strengthening the adventure tourism value chain. By implementing targeted initiatives, UNDP has focused on enhancing local capacity through training programs and expert consultations for the key participants of this value chain, improving the quality of services offered, and ensuring that key participants in the value chain are equipped with the necessary skills to deliver exceptional tourism experiences.

UNDP also promotes sustainable tourism practices that prioritize environmental conservation and community involvement. By encouraging eco-friendly tourism, the organization helps minimize the environmental impact of travel while fostering a greater appreciation for Kyrgyzstan's rich cultural and natural heritage. Investments in necessary infrastructure—such as improved access to natural sites and improved accommodations - also facilitate a more welcoming environment for tourists.

Moreover, UNDP emphasizes the importance of involving local communities in tourism development, ensuring that they benefit directly from the economic opportunities created by this sector. With its stunning landscapes and diverse cultural heritage, Kyrgyzstan is well-positioned to attract international visitors. By leveraging these strengths and focusing on sustainable tourism practices, the country is to untap its socio-economic potential, fostering growth and stability in the regions.

Tourism as an Instrument for Peace

Beyond its economic benefits, tourism serves as a bridge between cultures. It encourages intercultural dialogue and understanding, enabling people to connect. In Kyrgyzstan, this is especially pertinent given the country’s diverse cultural tapestry and rich traditions. By promoting tourism, we foster peace and reconciliation, creating spaces where people can learn from each other and celebrate their differences.

World Tourism Day 2024 aims to underscore these themes, highlighting tourism’s role in promoting peace and cultural understanding both locally and globally.
