UNDP Welcomes UN Third Member of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus

Nicosia, 8 October, 2024 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cyprus, welcomes the arrival of Mr Pierre Gentile, who assumed his responsibilities as the new UN Third Member of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus.

Mr. Jakhongir Khaydarov, UNDP Cyprus Head of Office, welcomed Mr Gentile and stated that UNDP Cyprus with the generous support of the EU, is honoured to play a part in the CMP project, and will continue to support initiatives that promote peace and understanding between the communities on the island.

The European Union is the main donor for the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP), with a total contribution of approximately €38.5 million to date.

The Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, based on Council Regulation 389/2006, aims at facilitating the reunification of Cyprus by encouraging the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community, with particular emphasis on the economic integration of the island, on improving contacts between the two communities and with the EU, and on preparation for the EU body of laws (also referred to as acquis communautaire).
