October 24, 2024
The official mission of Ms. Kanni Wignaraja, UNDP’s Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, concluded with a prestigious high-level event attended by His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the event celebrated over 45 years of UNDP's dedicated service and enduring partnership with the Maldives.
The occasion marked a significant milestone in the Maldives-UNDP relationship, featuring the soft launch of an exhibition that highlighted the country’s biggest developmental achievements over the past four and a half decades, supported by UNDP. This exhibition showcased transformative projects and initiatives that have contributed to the Maldives' journey toward sustainable development. Additionally, the event saw the launch of a special edition of UNDP Maldives’ Island Life magazine, which commemorated the collaborative efforts that have shaped the nation’s progress and highlighted key development milestones.
In his address, President Dr. Muizzu acknowledged the pivotal role that UNDP has played in the Maldives' development trajectory, stating, "The challenges ahead are formidable, but with UNDP on our side and by our side, we are confident in our ability to build a more resilient, inclusive, and prosperous Maldives." His remarks reflected the deep trust and shared vision that has underpinned the Maldives-UNDP partnership for over four decades, as both parties continue to work together to tackle the evolving challenges facing the nation.
At the event, we launched the UNDP 45+ exclusive gift pack featuring eco-friendly tote bags, as well as notebooks and pencils that are innovative products that when planted after use will sprout, symbolizing our shared dedication to environmental sustainability.
Over the decades, UNDP has supported the Government and people of the Maldives across various areas of human development, including institutional strengthening, inclusive growth, sustainable livelihoods, climate action, and resilience. UNDP Maldives Resident Representative, Mr. Enrico Gaveglia, emphasized that Ms. Wignaraja’s visit reinforces UNDP’s unwavering commitment to the Maldives’ goal of becoming a fully developed country by 2040.
