Our focus

Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation and Natural Resource Management

UNDP's efforts in climate change mitigation, adaptation, and natural resource management are geared towards enhancing community resilience in the face of environmental degradation and climate change. By supporting communities in adopting resilient green recovery strategies, UNDP aims to mitigate the potential erosion of sub-national foundations for future development resulting from climate change and environmental degradation.

Our work

UNDP's actions include improving access to electricity, particularly through renewable energy solutions, and ensuring equitable access to water resources through inclusive water resource management. We are committed to assisting crisis-affected communities in restoring degraded land, forests, and ecosystems. Additionally, UNDP promotes climate-smart agriculture and works to enhance solid and hazardous waste management practices. These initiatives will not only generate updated data and knowledge related to climate change, energy, and natural resources but also strengthen advocacy and coordination efforts. Furthermore, UNDP will build sub-national capacities to accelerate action on climate change, sustainable energy, and environmental management.

A key aspect of these community-based initiatives involves close collaboration with local women's groups. These groups play a pivotal role in bolstering environmental resilience by actively participating in the planning and implementation of innovative climate change adaptation strategies and the execution of mitigation plans.

This approach seeks to foster sustainable development while safeguarding communities from the adverse impacts of climate change and environmental challenges.

From Biodiversity to Prosperity: A Climate Action Success Story in Rural Syria

UNDP’s biodiversity conservation project in Frounloq Reserve has transformed rural livelihoods since its launch in 2005. From humble beginnings with 22 jobs and 100 families, it has expanded to benefit 2,000 families.

With popular products like laurel soap, dairy, thyme, and pepper paste, the project is empowering farmers and livestock breeders, boosting incomes and food security while protecting the environment, preserving biodiversity and heritage.

Let's celebrate sustainable rural development, building a brighter future in Syria!
