In Beira, the capital of Sofala Province, Mozambique, youth are re-imagining their futures amidst serious adversity. The resilience they demonstrate in facing the challenges, particularly those brought by Cyclone Idai, is a testament to their strength, their determination and their hope for a better future. Instead of succumbing to despair, they are finding innovative ways to fight hunger and create hope for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Despite the scars left by past disasters, young entrepreneurs in Beira are re-discovering themselves, re-orienting their mind-sets and adopting new tools to drive new vision to transform their environments. In short, they are adopting new a thinking that is helping them to understand the challenges they face and the tools and capacities needed to unlock locally-driven and sustained solutions. They are thinking creatively and innovatively, in many ways a systems approach. They understand that innovation is key to revitalizing existing businesses and creating new opportunities. One notable example is their creative use of traditional straw, repurposed into modern products like handbags, baskets, and decorative plates. By blending age-old techniques with fresh ideas, these young innovators are breathing new life into traditional crafts, highlighting the potential of local resources.

Take, for instance, Julieta, a clever entrepreneurs who has found ways to sell finely chopped cabbage in various quantities and locations, responding directly to customer needs. Through this seemingly small innovation, Julieta has made a substantial impact, providing sustenance for many who rely on this simple yet essential product. It showcases how a little creativity can offer solutions to those who may lack time or resources, benefiting both the seller and the community. She is very much aware that the success of her work stems from an inter-connected set of actors (her peers), elements (knowledge, space, people); relationships (friends, family, customers, city authorities, etc); rules (city code, youth policy, tax system); and resources (funds, ideas, raw materials, etc) that collectively produce and sustain the outcome she desires – some money in her pocket and sets of skills she acquires.

Like Julieta, many Artists in Beira are also pushing their limits, stepping beyond their conventional boundaries, adopting new designs intended to attract new clients and expand their market share. They are merging traditional sculpture with modern 3D designs to preserve their cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.. This fusion not only elevates their artistic expressions but also opens doors to new opportunities and wider audiences. By reinventing their art, they embrace innovation and position themselves for growth in a competitive landscape.

Another family of hustlers are the young food vendors who have demonstrated an incredible entrepreneurial spirit. They are capitalizing on the popularity of local dishes, like the beloved "badgia," by creating enticing combo meals, loved by many. This simple yet impactful innovation has become a staple for many young residents, transforming the struggle against hunger into a thriving business model that empowers local youth. With every meal sold, they not only feed themselves and their families but also contribute to a growing ecosystem of employment and economic activity.

The Power of Innovation in Mozambique

Mozambique, as a country, is experiencing a burgeoning wave of innovation. According to the 2023 Global Innovation Index, Mozambique has shown promising strides in areas like technology adoption and creative industries. This includes the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) which, as a disruptive technology, has the power to transform Mozambique’s landscape, potentially open up new opportunities including those that can promote new business creation, optimize value chains, build partnerships, and ultimately fast-track Mozambique’s journey toward equitable and sustainable development.  In Sofala Province, initiatives aimed at boosting entrepreneurship among youth are gaining traction, underscoring the potential for local innovation to enhance businesses, drive economic growth and improve the lives of all Mozambicans.

Statistics reveal that approximately 60% of Mozambique's population is under 25, a demographic rich with potential for driving change through innovation. By harnessing the creativity and determination of its youth, Mozambique stands poised to tackle significant challenges like unemployment and food insecurity.
In Beira, the youth are eager for connection, craving interaction with other innovators and success stories. They seek platforms to share their experiences and insights, hoping to inspire one another and catalyze new ideas. This collaborative spirit can serve as the missing link, igniting creativity and entrepreneurial drive among peers.
