What we do

Armenia faces two concurrent challenges: 1) To transition from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) mandated Biennial Update Reports to the Biennial Transparency Reports (BTR) mandated by the Paris Agreement and to prepare and submit the country’s first and second BTR as well as 5th National Communication; and 2) To continue improvements in climate measurement, reporting, and verification and  greenhouse gas inventories that will improve the information available to national and international decision-makers for climate action; and to build capacity in participating institutions.

This project directly supports national reporting under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, and it will provide information and analysis that can inform national strategies, the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and the existing and upcoming national and sectoral strategies and specific development goals that support its achievement. 

The project will be implemented under the UNDP Country Office Support to National Implementation (NIM) modality with the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center SNCO of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia (HMC) as the Implementing Partner.

Objectives

The project objective is to assist Armenia in the preparation and submission of BTR1 and a combined Fifth National Communication combined with BTR2 for the fulfilment of the obligations under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.

Some results so far

The project assists the country in mainstreaming and integrating climate change considerations into national and sectoral development policies by giving continuity to the institutional and technical capacity strengthening process initiated by in the framework of the Capacity Building for Transparency Framework UNDP-GEF project. Project activities currently are concentrated on development of Greenhouse Gas Inventory for 1990-2022 to assess and document the progress towards Armenia’s NDCs. In the same time is going on collection of information on vulnerability and adaptation activities on-going in the country.
