Voices of resilience: Stories from Vietnam's coastal communities
November 19, 2024
In the face of escalating climate change impacts, Vietnam's coastal communities have borne the brunt of many environmental challenges, including rising sea levels, severe storms, and devastating floods. However, amidst adversity, they have demonstrated remarkable resilience, embodying the strength and determination of the Vietnamese people.
Voices of Resilience is a testament to the transformative power of collective action and international collaboration. Through the generous support of the Green Climate Fund, UNDP and the Government of Viet Nam, alongside our dedicated partners and local communities, embarked on a mission to improve the resilience of vulnerable coastal communities to the impacts of climate change.
There is so much to celebrate. Since 2018, we have constructed more than 4,000 storm and flood-resistant homes, and will be building 1,040 more thanks to our initial success. We have also restored more than 4,000 hectares of vital mangrove ecosystems along the coastline, providing natural protection and new economic opportunities for those who rely on them. Furthermore, by enhancing access to climate data and disaster preparedness tools, we have equipped more than 62,000 people with the knowledge and resources needed to safeguard their lives and livelihoods from the threat of storms and floods.
Within these pages, you will discover the inspiring narratives of resilience and hope that have emerged from the heart of Viet Nam's coastal communities through the work of this project. Their stories underscore the indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people and reinforce the importance of collective efforts in addressing the urgent challenges of climate change.
