In the heart of Zambia, a young female innovator is making waves in the realm of women’s health. Retiana Tiyamike Phiri, a passionate advocate, recently represented Zambia at YouthConnekt Africa, where she shared her groundbreaking work aimed at addressing reproductive health challenges faced by women in her community. "I was deeply moved by the stories of women struggling with limited access to safe and effective pain management. It drove me to create a device that could alleviate their pain and empower them to lead healthier lives," she reflects.

Retiana's innovation, Pain Ease, was born out of a personal connection to the struggles many women endure due to reproductive conditions like menstrual pain and endometriosis. This intimate understanding of systemic healthcare inadequacies fuelled her resolve to develop an effective solution. However, her journey has not been without its challenges. Securing financial support for her innovation proved difficult, and she faced the inherent biases that women often encounter in the tech industry. To navigate these hurdles, Retiana sought mentorship and guidance through organizations like Standard Chartered Women in Technology and Bongo Hive Technology, building a strong network that helped her refine her ideas. Additionally, accessing advanced manufacturing capabilities in Zambia was a significant hurdle; however, by receiving support from the UNDP Accelerator Labs in Zambia, through programs like the Mukuba Unipod and the National Innovation Initiative, she was equipped with essential technical resources and support to bring her vision to life.

During a mini testing phase for Pain Ease, Retiana had a transformative experience that reinforced her mission. One user expressed heartfelt gratitude, explaining that the device allowed her to manage pain without missing work or social events. "Her gratitude was overwhelming. It underscored how even small innovations could restore dignity and freedom to women burdened by chronic pain," Retiana recalls. This poignant moment emphasized the impact of her work and the importance of user-centered design.

Retiana’s recent participation at YouthConnekt Africa was a pivotal moment in her journey. Presenting her work to an audience of fellow innovators, policymakers, and funders provided a strong sense of validation. “Hearing how my work reflects Zambia’s potential in technological advancement and manufacturing was deeply fulfilling,” she notes, underscoring the significance of collaboration and knowledge sharing among African innovators. As a young Zambian woman, Retiana is dedicated to improving reproductive health on the continent, stating, "This innovation represents my drive to address the challenges that many women like me face. I hope it will reduce the stigma surrounding reproductive health, encourage women to seek help earlier, and empower them to manage their health confidently."

Moreover, her vision extends beyond local impact. Retiana aims to align her work with the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by creating scalable, locally made health solutions. "My work is about creating solutions that can be shared and scaled across borders," she explains. "By collaborating with manufacturers, healthcare providers, and distributors in different African countries, I aim to expand my innovation's impact and make it accessible to women throughout the continent."

“I would tell young women to trust in their unique perspectives and the power of their ideas. Don’t be afraid to start small, and don’t let challenges discourage you. Surround yourself with mentors and like-minded individuals who can guide and support you. You have the ability to change lives, and your innovation can leave a lasting impact."
Retiana’s journey serves as a powerful reminder for young women everywhere.
