UNDP and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change opens a one-stop platform for climate change

Ankara, 28 November 2024 – Türkiye’s first Climate Portal, an online platform that provides accurate and up-to-date information on climate change for both decision-makers and individuals, has been officially launched today in Ankara. The portal, which aims to make significant contributions to achieving Türkiye’s climate goals, was prepared by the Directorate of Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change (MoEUCC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Türkiye, within the “Enhancing Adaptation Action in Turkey Project'' funded by the European Union (EU) and the Republic of Türkiye.

The Türkiye Climate Portal aims to create a national climate change archive that creates awareness and assists informed decision-making processes. It will facilitate communication and collaboration among stakeholders, serving as a platform for sharing information on best practices and effective/feasible climate change strategies. Additionally, it includes an interface for tracking, reporting, and sharing progress on climate action plans, enabling the MoEUCC to monitor advancements by various stakeholders and organizations.

The portal provides users with the ability to filter content according to their needs, learn about Türkiye's climate change policies, national strategies, and action plans, stay informed about current national and international legislation and regulations, and access research, reports and educational materials. The portal provides analysis of Türkiye’s climate change data, including greenhouse gas emissions, temperature changes, and precipitation rates. This way, users will be able to access essential data that is key in the combat against climate change, and use and improve these data through collaboration. The users will also be able to follow all climate change-related activities and events across the country such as projects, workshops and trainings via an interactive map and calendar.

The portal is a comprehensive resource for various stakeholders. Public institutions and policymakers can access necessary information and resources for developing and implementing climate policies, whereas academics and researchers can contribute to studies with scientific data, reports, and current research. Private sector and investors may gain insights on climate finance and investment opportunities in the field of climate change, while NGOs and individuals can find materials for awareness campaigns and community engagement.

Stakeholder registration for the portal is carried out through the E-Government platform. Authorized representatives from central and local public institutions, municipalities, and universities will be able to register and contribute content.

The Climate Portal was developed based on similar models in Europe. The EU has developed the Climate-ADAPT and many EU countries have established their own web-based platforms with similar objectives.

The portal aims to continuously update and expand, providing more data, analyses, and information. It seeks to become a central platform for tracking and reporting Türkiye’s national climate targets and actions in the fight against climate change.
