Bringing Climate Resilience to the Forefront
UNDP Syria at COP16
December 1, 2024
Event Details
02 - 14 December 2024
UNDP Pavillion, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Syria is at the forefront of a dual crisis: a protracted humanitarian emergency compounded by escalating climate change impacts. After 13 years of crisis, 16.7 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, and over 6.9 million are internally displaced. This has left vulnerable populations, including women, youth, and persons with disabilities, struggling with poverty and limited opportunities. The destruction of critical energy, water, and agricultural infrastructure has heightened water insecurity and food scarcity, intensifying rural-to-urban migration and social tensions. Climate change has further strained Syria’s fragile ecosystems, with overuse of natural resources, deforestation, and pollution compounding the damage.
Meet our Delegation
The side event organized by UNDP Syria will bring together relevant stakeholders to address challenges and opportunities in advancing climate within Syria. It will also showcase key initiatives that address the dual challenges of climate and crisis impacts in Syria and discuss pathways to resilience and sustainable recovery.
