UNDP Bahrain and UOB Workshop on Business and Human Rights

On May 21, 2024, UNDP Bahrain, in collaboration with the University of Bahrain (UoB), hosted a pivotal workshop to advance the integration of Business and Human Rights (BHR) into academic curricula. This initiative marks a critical step in fostering a human rights-focused approach to education in Bahrain and preparing future leaders to drive responsible business practices.

Academia as a Driver of Human Rights

The workshop brought together faculty members from UoB’s law, business, and other departments to explore how universities can play a central role in promoting the BHR agenda. Against the backdrop of a lack of dedicated BHR research or teaching centers in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, the sessions emphasized the vital role academia plays in filling this gap.

Led by Dr. Harpreet Kaur, Business and Human Rights Specialist from UNDP Asia-Pacific, participants were introduced to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). The discussions focused on the foundational pillars of Protect, Respect, and Remedy and their application to corporate accountability and sustainability.

Creating a Framework for Action

The interactive workshop included group activities, case studies, and brainstorming sessions to outline how BHR principles can be incorporated into UoB’s undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Participants explored potential course topics such as "Human Rights in Supply Chain Management" and "Economics and Human Rights," as well as practical learning opportunities like internships and fieldwork to deepen students’ understanding of real-world challenges.

The importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and ethical leadership was also highlighted, ensuring that future graduates are equipped to champion human rights in the business world.

Building on a Strong Foundation

UoB’s commitment to human rights education, exemplified by its Legal Aid Clinic that has engaged over 33,000 students since 2014, provided a robust starting point for this initiative. The workshop built on these efforts, setting the stage for the development of a dedicated BHR curriculum.

Shaping the Future of BHR in Bahrain

This workshop reflects a broader vision to position Bahrain as a leader in advancing BHR in the region. By empowering academia to drive this agenda, UNDP Bahrain and UoB are laying the groundwork for a new generation of responsible leaders. The collaboration aligns with Bahrain’s efforts in achieving the SDGs and enhances its standing as a regional hub for promoting human rights in business.
