Ihuru Baazaar: A New Chapter for Farmers in AA. Thoddoo
December 19, 2024
On October 22, 2024, the Ihuru Baazaar Farmers’ Market officially opened in AA. Thoddoo, an initiative led by the Business Centre Corporation (BCC) and the Ministry of Economic Development, with support from the Government of Japan and UNDP Maldives. This project is part of a broader effort to strengthen food security and empower local farmers under the "Project for Developing Sustainable Agricultural Economy (PDSAE)."
The Ihuru Baazaar brings to life the "Farm to Plate" concept, connecting farmers directly with consumers and encouraging innovation in agricultural practices. The market consists of a single-story building covering 2,443 square feet, featuring 10 kiosks equipped with mini fridges and microwaves for selling fresh and value-added products. Additionally, it includes seating areas, restrooms, and open spaces for community activities, creating a vibrant hub for residents and visitors.
Farmers and agro-businesses in Thoddoo will benefit from an incubation programme designed to enhance farming techniques, develop value-added products, and promote eco-friendly agricultural practices. Through mentorship, training, and resources provided by the programme, local farmers will have the opportunity to improve their yields, diversify their offerings, and increase their income.
Selected farmers will lease kiosks at the market for one year, with BCC providing ongoing training in agriculture and entrepreneurship while monitoring their progress. The initiative also positions the farmers' market as a potential tourist attraction, further boosting the local economy.
This project, generously funded by the People of Japan, reflects a commitment to addressing food security challenges in the Maldives while promoting sustainable agricultural productivity in Thoddoo. By fostering innovation and collaboration, Ihuru Baazaar is not only supporting local farmers but also contributing to a more resilient agricultural sector in the Maldives.
