Gulbarchyn Madraimova, a resident of the Alay district, has transformed from a craftswoman into a successful entrepreneur, inspiring many along the way. In 2021, taking her first bold step into the business world, she established the "Barchyn" yurt camp. It all began with a single shyrdak — a traditional felt carpet made from sheep's wool, which Gulbarchyn crafted by hand. Following a friend's advice, she decided to list her creation on an international online platform.

"To my surprise, the shyrdak sold very quickly. A young couple from Germany made the first purchase. That success inspired me to turn my felt-making skills into a small business. Soon after, I set up my first yurt and began welcoming tourists," Gulbarchyn shares.

Today, Gulbarchyn owns six yurts that operate as a yurt village, becoming a retreat for adventure tourism enthusiasts. Here, tourists can not only relax, enjoying the nature and views of the majestic Alay, but also immerse themselves in the process of creating traditional felt products that attract the attention of foreign tourists.

However, this success story emerged from a path full of challenges. After losing her husband early and leaving with five children to raise, Gulbarchyn became the family's primary breadwinner. Moreover, she created employment for her brother with disabilities.

"Working at the camp means more than just earning an income. Here, I feel part of something bigger: interacting with tourists and being in nature brings me peace of mind," says Gulbarchyn's brother, Jamshytbek Madraimov.

Currently, Gulbarchyn provides permanent employment to five women, and during the summer tourist season, this number increases several times.

Thanks to UNDP grant support through the "Aid for Trade" project, she plans to expand her services by purchasing another yurt for felt-making workshops and extending the tourist season to welcome visitors during winter months.

“UNDP gave me not only financial support, but also invaluable knowledge about creating an attractive tourist product, competent planning of business processes, and effective promotion of services. Every consultation, every training helps me turn my dream into reality,” - Gulbarchyn explains.

The story of Gulbarchyn Madraimova is more than a success. It demonstrates how traditional crafts can become the foundation of a modern business, and that perseverance and support can transform even the boldest dreams into reality. Her experience inspires women both in Alay and beyond its borders.
