African Union's COVID-19 Recovery Framework Adopted

The African Union Commission prepared with UNDP support a framework for a comprehensive and resilient recovery from COVID-19 that was adopted by Member States in early 2022 to contribute to better preparedness for epidemics and disasters

UNDP's Resilience Hub for Africa, in coordination with other partners (FAO, UNDRR, WHO, AfDB and others) in 2021 helped the African Union Commission (AUC) develop a COVID-19 Recovery Framework that articulates a vision for recovery from the current pandemic and unprecedented situation.

The goal of the COVID-19 Recovery Framework is to guide resilient socio-economic recovery efforts at the continental, regional and national levels from a multi-risk perspective, creating preconditions for building resilient societies in the African continent in line with Priority 4 of the Sendai Framework for DRR. The Framework has been approved by the Specialised Technical Committee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment in December 2021 and endorsed by Heads of States at the African Union Summit in February 2022.

This initiative that provides AU and RECs with effective continental leadership and guidance on a comprehensive and resilient recovery from COVID-19 grew out of a concept note that the Sahel Resilience Project in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Environmental Sustainability at AUC, advocating for a COVID-19 Recovery Framework for Africa. This collaboration culminated on 20 April 2021 in a formal request from the Commission to UNDP to support the preparation of the framework for the continent.
