Responding to the climate change in the Arab region: managing risks to water security and building community resilience

Following the success of the first Arab-Japan Political Dialogue in September 2017, a series of Policy Roundtables was launched in September 2019 by the League of Arab States (LAS) and the Government of Japan, in partnership with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aiming to establish a policy dialogue platform to discuss common development priorities and concerns, and explore policies and solutions to support the Arab region.

To date, the tripartite partnership has hosted five Policy Roundtables whose topics included education and human development; socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis and paths of recovery; digital transformation; and sustainable reconstruction and infrastructure towards SDGs. The series has provided an effective platform to enhance constructive cooperation between Japan and the Arab states, by engaging UNDP as a co-host, to address multi-layered challenges in the region, particularly in the context of the pandemic and post-pandemic times where the countries face compounded challenges.

The Sixth Policy Roundtable will focus on challenges deriving from climate change with a particular focus on water, to discuss how the Arab region can address current challenges and future risks.

The event will bring together approximately 80 policy makers, development experts, and other stakeholders from LAS member states, UN agencies, Japan and other international partners to discuss growing challenges from climate change, in particular, issues associated with water scarcity in the Arab region. The discussions will address socio-economic implications of climate change and water scarcity, and suggest potential approaches, solutions, and national and local level policy recommendations to address these challenges.
