HCFC Phase-Out Management Plan Stage II - HPMP-II

Overview of Guyana’s Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) Phase-out Management

Guyana is committed to phasing out hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) as part of its obligations under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. While the country does not have any HCFC-based manufacturing activities, it imports small quantities of HCFC-22 for servicing equipment and occasional imports of HCFC-141b for flushing systems. These substances are primarily used in the maintenance of HCFC-based refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

Adopting the Montreal Protocol Schedule

The Government of Guyana has pledged to follow the phased reduction schedule outlined in the Montreal Protocol. This involves a stepwise approach to achieving a complete phase-out of HCFCs by 2030.

Current Focus: Stage II of the HCFC Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP)

The current submission outlines Stage II of Guyana’s HCFC Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP), which targets a 35% reduction in HCFC consumption by 2020. This stage concentrates on activities within the servicing sector, particularly focusing on the use of HCFC-22. Key priorities include:

  • Capacity building for technicians to adopt alternative technologies.
  • Promoting the use of low-global warming potential (GWP) alternatives for servicing and system maintenance.
  • Awareness programs to educate stakeholders about the phase-out timeline and environmentally friendly alternatives.

Guyana’s Commitment

By adhering to the Montreal Protocol timeline and implementing strategic actions through the HPMP, Guyana reaffirms its dedication to protecting the ozone layer, mitigating climate change, and fostering sustainable environmental practices. These efforts ensure that the country remains on track to meet its international obligations while promoting a green and sustainable future.
