Reflecting on the journey of the Gender Machinery Project in the FSM
Strengthening Communities, Building Futures for Gender Equality
December 19, 2024
The year 2024 has been a remarkable one for the Strengthening Gender Machinery Project in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), a project headed by the FSM Department of Health and Social Affairs (DHSA) and supported by India-UN Development Partnership Fund and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pacific Office.
DHSA has spearheaded a series of community-driven initiatives that have supported women empowerment and promoted gender equality. This collaboration has laid a strong foundation for the project’s progress and the following highlights showcase the great efforts made in 2024.
Celebrating International Women’s Day
In March, DHSA and UNDP teamed up with the Pohnpei Women’s Council to celebrate International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to honoring the achievements of women and acknowledging the ongoing challenges they face. The event was a vibrant display of culture, unity, and empowerment, with workshops, performances, and discussions surrounding women’s rights and equality. It was a reminder of how far women in the FSM have come and how much further they can go when given the support and tools they need to thrive.
Empowering Rural Women in Yap State
One of the most inspiring initiatives this year has been the empowerment of rural women, particularly through the Tomil Women Association (TWA) in Yap State. With the project’s support, the TWA now has access to farming technology that includes tractors, lawn mowers, shredders, and other essential tools intended to enhance agricultural productivity.
These tools are vital in helping women increase food production, contributing to local food security, and boosting sustainable farming practices. The success of this initiative not only showcases the power of community-driven projects but also highlights how empowering rural women can positively impact broader development goals, including #ZeroHunger.
Through these efforts, rural women are not just cultivating crops—they are cultivating the future of their communities, proving that when women have the right resources, they can drive real change and lead their communities to prosperity.
Supporting Women in Sports: Chuuk Basketball Team
The project also extended its support to the Chuuk Girls Basketball Team, fostering gender equality through sports. Sports are an important tool for empowerment, teaching women and girls vital leadership skills, teamwork, and resilience. By supporting local sports teams, the project is helping create spaces where women can excel, challenge gender norms, and inspire others.
The Chuuk Basketball Team’s growth is a shining example of how nurturing talent in all areas—whether it’s farming, sports, or education—can lead to stronger, more confident women ready to take on the world.
Building Infrastructure for a Better Future
Another key achievement this year was the handover of a daycare center in Yap and a water purification system in Chuuk. These infrastructure enhancements are not just about providing physical structures—they are about improving the quality of life for women and children. The daycare center offers a safe environment for children, allowing mothers and fathers to work or engage in community activities while knowing their children are cared for. Meanwhile, the water purification system – to be used in dispensaries -- in Chuuk ensures access to clean, safe drinking water, which is essential for the health and well-being of families.
These infrastructure projects are foundational in creating a more supportive environment for women and children, addressing basic needs crucial for fostering thriving communities.
Looking Ahead: Building on Success
As we look to 2025, UNDP remains committed to its mission of empowering women and ensuring that gender equality is woven into the fabric of the FSM’s development. The progress made this year is a testament to the strength and resilience of the women and communities the project serves.
With a focus on sustainable development, gender equality, and locally-led solutions, the year ahead promises to be one of continued progress and empowerment for women across the FSM. Together, we are strengthening communities, building futures, and creating a more equitable world for everyone.
