Honiara, Solomon Islands: Solomon Islands National University (SINU) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today in Honiara to strengthen youth development and environmental conservation in the country.

With 70 percent of Solomon Islands' population under 35, this partnership aims to equip young people with skills for leadership and environmental stewardship.

The MOU focuses on protecting Solomon Islands' unique biodiversity through three key areas: addressing invasive species, supporting community-based ecosystem management, and promoting environmental awareness.

Solomon Islands National University Vice Chancellor, Professor Transform Aqorau, said:

“Through this agreement, we will grow together. I would like to reiterate the value that our university places on working in partnership with UNDP.”

UNDP Pacific Office Resident Representative, Munkhtuya Altangerel, added:

“This marks a significant investment in the country’s future and we are honoured to sign this MOU to mark the commencement of what will be a long-standing partnership with SINU. This collaboration will strengthen local expertise in environmental management while creating opportunities for Solomon Islands' next generation of leaders.”

The agreement was signed during the university's orientation week, coinciding with the enrollment of 4,000-5,000 new students for the 2025 academic year.
