Pacific Security Sector Governance Project
The project works to promote peaceful and inclusive societies in the Pacific for sustainable development and the building of effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels, outlined under Sustainable Development Goal 16, is closely aligned with the governance of the security sector in Pacific island countries.
UNDP supports early access to justice initiatives undertaken by justice sector stakeholders in Fiji under the project. Such support has materialised into the successful implementation by justice sector stakeholders in Fiji for the pilot of the First Hour Procedure and Video Recorded Interviews and plans are ongoing with a view to replicate such support in other Pacific island countries.
The above activities are carried out in partnership with the Fiji Police Force and justice stakeholders, and with in-kind support from the British High Commission together with technical support accessed from leading practitioners in the areas of torture prevention and early access to justice to include the Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies, United Kingdom and the Association for the Prevention of Torture.
What we do
- Strengthen the capacity of the justice sector stakeholders to comply with Fiji’s obligations under the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
- Increase awareness in all communities of the rights of arrested and detained persons through the interlinkages with the UNDP's Rights, Empowerment and Cohesion (REACH) for Rural and Urban Fijians project via their mobile teams.
- Enhance delivery of services provided by the Fiji Police Force and the Legal Aid Commission in early access to justice for arrested and detained persons to include support to the pilot of the First Hour Procedure and Video Recorded Interviews.
- Policy making are informed and based on evidence through research and analysis on the relevant areas related to arrested and detained persons, promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provision of access to justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions.
Sustainable Development Goals
