UNDP trains businesses in Papua New Guinea to green their operations

On February 11, UNDP, CEPA and CCDA facilitated a ‘Net-Zero Nature Positive Training & Knowledge Transfer Workshop’ for representative of the private sector, government agencies and civil society organizations

As Papua New Guinea continues its economic and industrial development, the urgency for businesses to adopt nature-positive and low-carbon solutions has never been greater.

To support local businesses in greening their practices, UNDP joined hands with the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) and the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) in facilitating a ‘Net-Zero Nature Positive Training & Knowledge Transfer Workshop’ in Port Moresby on 11 February 2025.

Through targeted capacity building, skills development, and exposure to global best practices on Net-Zero and Nature Positive strategies, the participants were able to gain technical knowledge on integration of decarbonization and biodiversity-risk mitigation systems into their business operation.

In his remarks to the participants, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Mr. Aadil Mansoor, highlighted how through its Climate Promise and Nature Pledge, UNDP is committed to helping governments meet their ambitions under the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

‘’This workshop is an important step in addressing our shared interests to ensure that PNG’s economic ambitions are realized. The time for action is now We must embrace a new paradigm, one that balances economic prosperity and environmental sustainability,’’ he stated.

“We are at a pivotal moment where the choices we make today will define the resilience, sustainability, and competitiveness of our industries tomorrow. Together, we can build a stronger, more sustainable future for PNG, where economic growth goes hand-in-hand with environmental stewardship,” added Mr. William Lakain, the Acting General Manager of MRV & National Communications at CCDA.

Key topics discussed during the workshop included industry specific dolutions for SMEs, extractives, agriculture, fisheries, and manufacturing; green financing and policy and financial incentives; and renewable energy, carbon offset projects, and sustainable business models. 

A total of 37 stakeholders from the private sector, government agencies, civil society organizations, and financial institutions attended the training.
